End of the journey

Rufus’s journey has come to an end.  He stopped eating and was very lethargic so we took him in and the osteosarcoma had spread into his chest.  We got another 10 days or so with him but in the end, it was the kindest thing to do.  He got to have one last doggy play date with his friend Subaka although there wasn’t too much playing on his behalf.

He lost his appetite for doggy food so he got treated like a king and ate chopped steak, potatoes, carrots, and broccoli twice a day.

On Friday the 15th September, we took him in.  He was excited to go for a ride.  He managed to get up and get into the truck with our help, but he didn’t want to get out at the other end.  We lifted him into a cart the vets have and his last journey was being wheeled in like the spoiled dog he was.  Here’s the last photo I have of my beautiful boy, two days before he was gone.

Rufus was the doggy love of my life and I will miss him every day.  The last 5 years were wonderful and he left us way too early, but we have memories and lots of photos to remember him by.  Rest in peace Rufus; love mummy, daddy, and big brother Chewy.

  1. I am so sorry to hear of Rufus crossing. This is the greatest gift we can give them when they are in pain and not feeling well. Grief is so personal and no one will be able to tell you when it won’t hurt or the tears will stop. It will lessen but doesn’t mean we still don’t miss them.
    Run free Rufus.

I’m comkng back when I can be a bit more comlosed, but I wanted to let you know we love that sweet huge heart of a dog! His impact will definitely loom LARGE here whenever big dogs are faced with this journey.

  3. I am very sorry about Rufus. Sounds like he and my boy Chance may have crossed the bridge together on the same day. I hope they are romping around together right now! Know that we are grieving with you and sending you big hugs.

  4. We are so sorry guys, and send all our condolences to your pack. You spoiled him rotten right up to the end. Rufus was such a sweetie, we know you will miss him terribly.

He fought so well (you both did!) and for what it’s worth, always remember you and Rufus will continue helping so many by sharing his journey here. Lots of vets still tell their clients that giant breeds can’t do well on three legs, so when they search online and find Rufus’ blog and see what a great life he had on three legs, they can find hope for their big dog too. If Rufus can do it, anyone can.

Do share more about your big boy and his life OK? He wasn’t a Tripawd long but his spirit will always be part of this community. We send all our love and gratitude for the impact you’ve made on the community. Thank you so much.

  5. I’m so so sorry you had to let your beautiful gentle giant Rufus go on to the bridge! I have such an admiration for these giant breed dogs that have amputation and show us all their tenacity. Rufus was such a special boy and will be remembered here always and his legacy will live on and give others who come here hope. Sending hugs and healing light to you as you navigate this hardest part of this journey! The love you two had will live on and you will find Rufus in everything beautiful in this world. He’ll be with you always.

  6. I jniw things are still horrible sad for you. It’s jard to remember all the great rimes at first, but goodness knows, there were lots of good times!

My stupid tavlet wouldn’t let me see the YouTube in an earlier blog of him swimming. I love that Rufus got extended time for more swimming and camping with you.

I just mentioned Rufus on another new member’s thread who was concerned avout how her 190lb dog would be able to even walk after amputation…..much less have a good rime. Yes, Rufus will continue to inspire and touch lives. Most importantly, Rufus’s experience will give other dogs a chance for more loving and spoiling.

Your Rufus is a strong and determined boy who didn’t let this piece of crap disease invade his fightin’ Spirit or invade his beautiful Soul. He never for ine second let it stop him from being Rufus.

Yes, this sweet voy will ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AND NEVER FORGOTTEN! As you can see, he will continue to shine his bright beacon of hope on anyone facing this journey, especially great big dogs!!

Take care of yourselves and know that Rufus will connect with you. He will let you know he is stil with you!! Thank you Rufus, for sharing this journey withnus. It is such a privilege.

    With love
